Live your beliefs and you can turn the world around. ~Henry David Thoreau*
This is so true; don’t you think? Consider this…how would your life be different today if you hadn’t believed in yourself?
How would your world be different today if other leaders hadn’t believed in their potential, their vision, their mission?
What if:
- Abraham Lincoln hadn’t believed slaves should be freed?
- John F. Kennedy, Jr., hadn’t believed a man could walk on the moon?
- Martin Luther King hadn’t believed in the dream of equality for all?
- Susan B. Anthony hadn’t believed women should vote?
- Jonas Salk hadn’t believed polio could be cured?
These are just a few examples; given time, and putting our heads together, we could probably come up with a list that would span countless pages of how others’ (and our own) beliefs have changed our lives, our communities, and our world.
Regardless of what stage of life — and leadership — you may be in, know that the first step you must take to move forward is the believe in yourself, in your dream, and your ability to accomplish it.
Believe and act as if it were impossible to fail. ~Charles F. Kettering
Do so, and success will surely follow.
Do so, and you will change the lives of more people than you can imagine, at levels you may not even be aware of.
Do so…we need you!

Note: This concludes this 12-month, focused Intentional Leadership journey. Thank you for accompanying me. Remember, it is a journey; even though our study together is ended, it doesn’t mean you must or should stop working through this process. This work, this guide, is archived for you on this site, and you are welcome to revisit it — even go through the whole process, or pieces of it, as the need arises — at any time in the future.

Reflecting on my childhood today, got me thinking about today’s post. I grew up in Southern California, about 15 minutes away from Disneyland. Talk about an undertaking that required an undeniable belief in one’s dreams!
If you’re not familiar with Walt Disney’s story, and how he built his empire, I recommend you do some reading. The man clearly had a dream — several of them, in fact — and he didn’t let much stand in his way of reaching his goals and bringing his dreams to reality. Disney dropped out of high school, spent some time in France with the Red Cross, returned to the States and sought employment as a newspaper artist. That didn’t work, so he went to work for an art studio, where he met one of his first partners. Their endeavor didn’t last long, however, as Disney was not a good money manager; their studio went bankrupt. Undeterred, he moved to a studio in Hollywood, where he went into cartooning, animation, and story-telling.
Blessed with creativity and imagination, Disney dabbled in a lot of different things before deciding to build a theme park for children. He developed the idea in the late 1940’s, and the park eventually opened in 1955, and as you are surely aware, the Disney empire continues to grow and expand to this day.
Along the way, he faced and overcame numerous obstacles and challenges; faced with the same hardships, many people would likely have given up. Walt Disney had big dreams, however, and a firm belief in his ability to bring his dreams to fruition. For a long list of his accomplishments, you can look any number of places: Wikipedia, The Walt Disney Company, his biography, etc…
The point is, belief will fuel your results.
What results have you achieved because you believed in yourself and your abilities as a leader?
Write it down…
What have I accomplished?
How did my beliefs fuel those accomplishments?
What would I like to accomplish in my future?
How do my current beliefs support those dreams?
What do I need to believe — that I don’t believe today — in order to achieve success in this area?

Good morning and Happy Friday! I hope this day finds you well and happy, after enjoying a delightful Thanksgiving with friends and family.
I have been working on a major transition in my life for a while now, and more intensely over the past few weeks. Finally, I have stepped through a doorway, so to speak, largely because of my belief in myself, my purpose, and my calling. In a lot of ways, what’s happening in my life was inevitable, I believe. I have a vision; I have the support and encouragement I need; I have knowledge, some level of wisdom, and experience to carry me forward; and I have a strategy to bring my dream into reality. Finally, and maybe most important, I believe I will be a success in my endeavor. So, this month’s topic is particularly relevant to me these days.
How about you? How important is what you believe, right now with where you are in your life today? What does it mean for where you are headed tomorrow?
And speaking of tomorrow…what plans do you have? How will you spend your time this weekend?
What thought are you giving to preparation for next week, as it brings with it a new month and the beginning of the end of 2013?
What thoughts, by chance, are you giving to preparation for 2014? It will be here before we know it!
I am actually taking a bit of a different approach to this weekend; it will be all about family, fun, and relaxation. It’s truly time for a short break…to reflect, regroup, adjust my view of the world, get comfortable with my new priorities…and celebrate a couple of birthdays. Delightfully, my Monday will truly be my own for the first time in a long time.
Whatever you choose for your weekend, I hope you are intentional about it. Remember…as each moment passes, it is gone.

Spend some time with your journal today, focusing on your beliefs and how they influence your ability to reach your potential. Consider both your beliefs in yourself and your beliefs about others.* Here are a few questions to get you started…then go where your thoughts take you!
What influence do you think beliefs have on your potential?
What do you think you need to believe about yourself in order to step fully into your potential?
What resources do you believe you need to unlock your potential?
How does what you believe about others influence their ability to reach their potential?
What changes could you make in your beliefs that would allow you to soar higher?
What changes could you make in your beliefs that might enable others to soar higher?

For those who believe, no proof is necessary. For those who don’t believe, no proof is possible. ~Stuart Chase
Over the past couple of years, I have significantly accelerated my personal growth, first by joining the John Maxwell Team, then by investing in the Mentorship program, then by enrolling in the Deeper Path Coaching Cohort, then a number of other investments, workshops, gaining access to mentors and coaches, studying books, and other lessons that have all seemed to roll out of and into each other…and one key point keeps rolling through my mind, day in and day out, with each new challenge and opportunity, and it is this:
Belief determines your potential
It’s another one of those things that is so simple, yet so profound, and so true.
You see, when I have believed in myself, I have been successful. When I have allowed doubt and fear to take charge, I have fallen behind. I see it in others, as well. You see it daily, also; although as you read the stories in the news, magazines, and in books, or hear them on the radio, you don’t always have the benefit of hearing the words explicitly stated.
I don’t watch American Idol, but I understand that it is Simon Cowell’s habit to ask each contestant why they think they can be the next winner; what he’s looking for is the person who unhesitatingly states something along the lines of: “This is what I was born for.” “I know this is my destiny.” “Because I believe I am the best at what I do, and I’m going to win!” The people who cannot state something close to these statements of confidence usually do not do as well. I suggest that in some of these cases, there is a lack of confidence, a lack of belief, or perhaps some self-limiting beliefs in action, holding these folks back from living into their full potential.
The point is to get you thinking about how your beliefs have impacted your potential.
Get out your journal and spend some time reflecting on these questions today:
Write a brief description of a time when you believed in yourself and your potential, and stepped forward into success.
What beliefs did you hold that made it possible?
What choices did you make to achieve your potential?
What can you carry forward, from this experience, that would serve you well in other situations?
Intentional Leadership — Month 12 — Belief

Well faithful readers, we are on the home stretch, as they say. Tomorrow we will begin the 12th, and final, month of our Intentional Leadership* journey. Over the next four weeks, we will focus on, think about, and take action in the area of Belief! It’s a fitting time of year for that — with the holidays coming up — don’t you think?
I believe each and every one of us is born with tremendous potential, and all the resources we need to reach it.
I believe each and every one of us can do all that we dream of and more.
I believe each and every one of us needs the support, insight, encouragement, and objectivity that is available to us only through a close friend or confidante…they see us as we cannot, and can provide us with new perspectives around how we interact in the world.
I also believe that too many of us fall short of our potential because our belief in ourself is not strong enough, and, as a result, we languish in our comfort zone, shackled with fear and doubt, and when we fail to live into our potential, we diminish others because we fail to share what we were meant to share with the world.
As Henry Ford said,
Whether you think (believe) you can or can’t, you are right.
Think of belief this way: It is the ignition switch that will launch you off the pad, if only you will hit the button!
Before we jump into the next four weeks, spend some time with your journal today and answer these questions:
What do I believe to be true about myself?
What do I believe is my potential as a leader?
What do I believe I am here to accomplish on earth?
What beliefs about myself do I need to accomplish my vision?
How have my beliefs about myself limited my ability to achieve what I have set out to do in the past?
What results can I attribute to my current self-beliefs?

Intentional Leadership — D2, W4, M11 — Initiative

Last week, I spent a few days with a group of like-minded, growth-oriented people from across the US and Canada. We were talking about our dreams and what it takes to bring them to fruition (it was a lot more profound than this, but simply put, that was the focus). One recurrent theme was “Dream Big.”
Dream Big!
After all, what’s the point of dreaming if you aren’t going to Dream Big?!
And why wouldn’t we dream big within our organizations, as well? Typically, in organizations, we speak of the BHAG — or Big, Hairy, Audacious Goal (Thank you, Jim Collins and Jerry Porras), which is a “commitment to challenging, audacious, and often risky goals and projects towards which a visionary company channels its efforts.”
What BHAG would propel your organization forward?
How can you use it to inspire others?
What steps would you need to take to initiate this BHAG?
What will you do, now, to get started?
Intentional Leadership — M10 Strategy — Wrap-up

For the past four weeks, we’ve been focused on Strategy, and now it’s time for this month’s wrap-up. Hard to believe! And we have only two months left on this Intentional Leadership Journey.
In an early blog post, I shared the story of my encounter with a young man working at the MAC counter in a mall I was shopping in. We got to talking and I shared that I had moved to the mid-west from Washington State and he talked about how he hoped to live in Seattle one day, soon. My response was that “hope is not a strategy,” which startled him back to reality, I think. He said he’d never thought about it that way. I asked how he thought he would get to Seattle — realize his dream — if he didn’t have a plan and take some action. We talked for a while longer, and as I left the store I could see the gears in his mind turning and turning…
Without a plan, our dreams will vanish. As a leader, we must be able to develop an actionable strategy for our team’s/organization’s vision to become a reality. And while it’s certainly crucial to your future success, having a strategy isn’t enough. Once you’ve cast the vision and engaged your followers, you must develop the strategy and then move forward to the next step: Execution. Great leaders don’t simply have a plan, they make it happen!*
So what does a sound strategy entail? It needs to be clear enough to give direction and flexible enough so you can adapt to changing conditions and unforeseeable events along your journey. As we’ve discussed, the only constant is change. If you aren’t moving forward — and I mean intentionally moving forward with a destination in mind — you are falling behind; in today’s world, that will result in the demise of your organization.
My mentors have told me — and I share it with my clients, as well — that leaders must deliberately and consistently set aside time to work ON their business, not just stay mired in the daily effort of working IN their business. I encourage my clients to schedule in “think time” as often as they need it — some do it daily, some weekly. Whatever the cadence you need, you need to do it and you need to make it a priority. In fact, I have some clients who have told me that when our coaching or mentoring engagement has concluded, they have maintained what they’ve referred to as the “Sacred Laura Time” (meaning our coaching/mentoring sessions were high priority and not to be messed with) as their thinking time, as they were already in the habit and had trained their colleagues and staff that they were engaged in important work during that time.
Be mindful, as you develop your strategies, to take into account the strengths of your team/organization, and work that knowledge into your plans, which will give you and even stronger chance of success down the road. The best strategies exploit an organization’s finest qualities.* In this way, you can prioritize your limited resources and use them to the most advantage for your organization.
As we conclude this month’s focus on strategy, spend a little time with your journal and reflect on what you’ve learned.
How are you thinking about strategy differently?
What steps do you need to take now to fully engage your organization, leverage their strengths, and propel yourself forward?
Are you disciplined enough to develop and stick to your strategy, even in the face of inconvenient circumstances and conditions?
Your answers to these questions will dictate the nature of your influence in the years ahead.
“See” you tomorrow, when I’ll introduce next month’s topic. In the meantime, have an intentional day.
